Rohit Sharma on the Verge of IPL Milestone

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 6: Star batter Rohit Sharma of the Mumbai Indians (MI) is just 79 runs shy of becoming the second player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history to achieve 7,000 runs.

The former MI captain, who has led the team to five IPL championships, could reach this significant milestone during the match against Gujarat Titans (GT) at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.

Currently, Rohit ranks as the second-highest run-scorer in IPL history, amassing 6,921 runs with an average of 29.83 and a strike rate of 132.00. Throughout his IPL journey, he has recorded two centuries and 46 fifties across 262 innings.

Leading the chart is Virat Kohli from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who has scored 8,509 runs in 263 matches and 255 innings, boasting an average of 39.57 and a strike rate exceeding 132.60, along with eight centuries and 62 fifties.

Rohit began his IPL career with the Deccan Chargers, playing from 2008 to 2010, where he accumulated 1,170 runs in 45 matches and 44 innings, averaging 30.79 with a strike rate over 131. His highest score during this period was 76*, and he achieved eight fifties.

For MI, he has scored 5,751 runs in 222 matches and 218 innings, maintaining an average of 29.64 and a strike rate above 132, including two centuries and 38 fifties.

Additionally, Rohit is only three sixes away from becoming the first Indian player and the second overall, after Chris Gayle (357), to reach the 300-sixes milestone in IPL history.

In the current season, Rohit has accumulated 293 runs in 10 matches, averaging 32.55 with a strike rate exceeding 155, including three half-centuries. His best score this season is 76*. After a slow start with just 56 runs in the first half of the season, he rebounded impressively with 234 runs in his next five innings, averaging 58.50.

Before the match, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene emphasized the importance of Rohit converting his starts into substantial scores, which has been beneficial for the team.

“The openers play a crucial role in setting the tone. With our batting lineup, a solid start is essential for the rest of the innings. Rohit’s ability to convert his starts gives us a significant advantage, and Ryan (Rickelton) enjoys batting alongside him, gaining valuable experience,” he stated.
